What a sportsbook is

A sportsbook is a business that takes wagers on sporting events. It publishes a price on each outcome it offers, the odds, and when a bettor accepts that price the book becomes the other side of the wager. If the bettor wins, the book pays at the agreed price; if the bettor loses, the book keeps the stake. Large operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel run sportsbooks alongside other products, and the same basic model applies to all of them.

Because the book is a counterparty, it manages risk. It moves prices when too much money lands on one side, limits how much it will accept, and builds a margin into every price, known as the vig, so that across many wagers it expects to come out ahead regardless of who wins any single game.

An example

A book lists the home team at -150 and the visitors at +130 for Sunday's game. A bettor who likes the visitors risks $100 at +130. If the visitors win, the book pays $130 in profit plus the original stake. If the home team wins, the $100 stays with the book. Meanwhile other customers took the home side, and the book has priced both so the combined action leaves it a margin either way.
