What an entry fee is

An entry fee is what you pay to enter one paid contest. It is shown on the contest page before you enter, along with the format and the payout tiers, and it is paid before the contest locks at kickoff. In Speed Survivor, entry to paid contests starts at $20. Some contests are free, and free contests are available weekly.

Entry fees are where a contest's prize pool comes from. The fees collected from everyone in a contest fund that contest's pool, which is held by a third-party custodian rather than by Speed Labs.

An example

The DET Lions at BUF Bills contest had a $20 entry fee and 118 entries, so it collected $2,360. It paid out $3,400, with Speed Labs adding the difference. The entry fee bought each of those 118 players the same thing: the same questions, at the same time, against the same field.

Paying with contest credit

An entry fee can be paid with cash in your balance or with contest credit from a promotion. Contest credit is for entries only and cannot be withdrawn. Entry fees also drive the first-deposit match: match credit releases at $1 for every $10 you spend in entry fees, so it is paid out as you play.
