What a jackpot is

A jackpot is a single large prize for a rare outcome. Lotteries have them, slot machines have them, and sports products have borrowed the idea: a prize far bigger than any regular payout, won only by the player who does something very few players will do. The word promises size and rarity at once. What it does not tell you on its own is how the prize is paid, which is why the terms behind a jackpot matter as much as the headline number.

An example

A hypothetical pick contest offers a jackpot to anyone who goes perfect across a full slate of picks. Most weeks nobody does, and the prize is not paid.
