What an NFL survivor pool is

An NFL survivor pool is the version of the survivor pool most people mean when they use the phrase. Each week of the regular season, every entrant still alive picks one NFL team to win its game outright. There is no point spread to cover; the team simply has to win. A loss ends your entry, and in most pools a tie does too. Every team can be picked only once, so the whole season becomes a planning problem: which favorites to spend now and which to save for the weeks when the schedule turns ugly.

Pools vary at the edges. Some allow a second entry, some require two picks in the late weeks to thin the field, and some let the last few survivors agree to share the pot early. The core rule does not change: pick a winner, never repeat, and one miss sends you home.

An example

Picture a hypothetical 50-person pool. In week one you take the strongest team on the slate against a weak opponent and survive with most of the field. By week six you are choosing between a mid-table favorite and saving the one elite team you have left for a harder week. You pick the favorite, it loses on a late field goal, and your season is over in October while the pool runs into December.
