What a season-long pool is

A season-long pool is any contest that runs the length of a sports season. Entrants make picks every week, results accumulate, and the prize is paid when the season is over. The NFL survivor pool is one kind; so are pick em pools where you choose the winner of every game each week and total up correct picks, confidence pools where you rank your picks by how sure you are, and season-long fantasy sports leagues built on a drafted roster.

What they share is time. The payoff is a long story with a lot of weeks in the middle, which is part of the appeal and part of the problem. A bad September can end your chances before the leaves turn, and the commissioner has to keep the spreadsheet, chase the late entries and hold the money for months.

An example

A hypothetical family pick em pool has twelve entrants picking every game each week. After eight weeks the leader is up by nine correct picks, and half the family has quietly stopped submitting. The pool still runs to the final regular-season week, and the payout happens in January, long after most people stopped checking the standings.

How Speed Survivor is different

Speed Survivor is the opposite end of the calendar. A contest starts at kickoff and settles the same night, so every game is a complete contest with its own pool, its own payout tiers and its own winners.
