What the opt-in is

The opt-in is a single choice you make once: to have your answers in paid-entry contests count toward the Perfect 36. It costs nothing, it does not change what you pay to enter any contest, and it does not need to be repeated game by game. Once it is on, every question you answer in a paid-entry contest is part of your run.

Before you opt in, your answers still count for the contest you are playing, for points, placement and prizes. They just are not tracked toward the Perfect 36. That is the whole difference.

An example

Two friends sign up on the same day. One enters code SPEED at sign-up, which switches the opt-in on from the first game. The other plays two paid contests before noticing the Perfect 36 and opting in. Both are fully entered in every contest they played. But only the first one's answers from those opening games count toward a run; the second one's run starts from the first paid question answered after opting in.

The lesson is simple: there is no reason to wait. Opting in is free, and turning it on early means no correct answers go uncounted.
