What a player prop is

A player prop is a prop bet on a single player's performance. The common NFL markets are passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, receptions, completions, and whether a player scores a touchdown. Most are posted as a line with an over and an under, each at a price, and settled from the official box score after the game.

Player props are where a lot of betting attention has moved, because they reward knowing a player's role, the matchup, and the likely game script. They are also the backbone of daily fantasy pick em, where the same kind of line becomes a more-or-less projection, and of same game parlays. Many books now update player props during the game as part of their live betting markets.

An example

A book lists a wide receiver at 5.5 receptions, over -120 and under +100. A bettor expects the defense to take him away and takes the under for $100 to win $100. He catches four passes in the first half and three more in the fourth quarter to finish with seven. The over wins and the bettor loses the $100.
