What a skill-based contest is

A skill-based contest is a competition in which the result depends mainly on what the participants know and how well they use it, rather than on chance. Chess tournaments, spelling bees and fantasy sports contests are familiar examples. Luck can play a part in any single moment, but over the course of a contest the better-prepared, better-judging participant tends to finish ahead.

The distinction matters because contests of skill and games of chance are treated differently, and how they are treated varies from state to state. That is why the same contest can be available in one state and not in the next, and why an operator describes its product carefully and publishes its rules.

An example

Two friends enter the same season-long fantasy contest. One reads injury reports, tracks matchups and adjusts a lineup every week. The other sets a roster in August and never looks at it again. Injuries and upsets hit both of them, but by December the first is usually well ahead, because the outcome rewarded attention and judgment over a full season rather than a single roll of the dice.

In Speed Survivor

Speed Survivor is a skill-based contest operated by Speed Labs, Inc. Every entrant answers the same twelve yes-or-no questions during one live NFL game, under the same timer. What separates the field is knowledge of the game and speed of judgment: a correct answer earns base points plus a speed bonus, and cuts remove the bottom of the field at set points.

There is no house. Speed Labs sets the question, never a price, and takes no position in any contest, so entrants compete against each other for a pool their entries funded. That is a different structure from sports betting, where a sportsbook sets odds and takes the other side. The full terms are in the contest rules.
