What a play-along game is

A play-along game is a game that runs in step with a live broadcast. Instead of being played on its own schedule, it waits for the event on television and builds its questions, picks or prompts from what is happening in real time. Game shows popularized the idea, letting viewers at home answer the same questions as the contestants. Sports took it further, because a live game produces a constant supply of moments worth predicting.

What separates a play-along game from ordinary trivia is that the answers are not known when the question is asked. The broadcast decides them. That gives every question a short life: it opens, the play unfolds, and the result is settled by what everyone watching just saw.

An example

During a college bowl game, a broadcaster runs a play-along feature in its own app. Before each drive, viewers pick whether the drive ends in a touchdown, a field goal or a punt. Points go to correct picks, and a leaderboard at halftime shows the top players among everyone who joined. Nothing is at stake beyond the leaderboard, and a viewer who misses a drive simply skips it and picks the next one.

How Speed Survivor is different

Speed Survivor is a play-along game with survival and speed added. The questions track one live NFL game, twelve of them, about one every five minutes of game clock, generated from live conditions such as the score, the clock and possession. Every entrant sees the same live question at the same time and has the same short window to answer.

Two things change the feel. First, speed counts: a correct answer earns base points plus a speed bonus that grows the faster you answer. Second, the field shrinks. Cuts remove the bottom of the field at set points, and in single-life contests a wrong answer ends your run, so skipping a question is not free the way it is in a casual play-along.
